CayosCochinos

View of two Islands from the boat with our guide and diving instructor Tony.

As I will be leaving Honduras in less than two weeks, Sandra and I have focused on doing some fun stuff together. Last weekend we went to CayosCochinos for a weekend of scuba diving and snorkeling.

This picture shows the main Island of CayosCochinos in the background, and a smaller one with the boats and the beach in the front.

CayosCochinos is an island range off the coast not far from La Ceiba and I find myself unable to explain the beauty of the place properly. It seems like an environment out of a dream, like paradise. There are two main islands and many smaller ones. Some are so small that there are only a couple of trees on them, nothing else. The sea around them is turquoise and the underwater life amazingly beautiful, although while scuba diving I was concentrating on how my ears felt a lot of the time, rather than focusing on the wild life.

Yesterday Sandra and I went rafting again and today I went horseback riding into a jungle trail, while Sandra had to go back to work at Guaruma. My whole body is aching. The rafting was really full on, we went down the rioCangrejal for about three hours on class 3 and 4 rapids, and by the time we got back we were exhausted. I am not used to horseback riding either, and so the few parts of the way on which we galloped were quite intense for me, and I can feel it in my muscles now.

Lately I have been feeling very nostalgic about Honduras and I kind of don’t want to leave. There are many reasons for this. I have moved back to La Ceiba and am again living with Jen in Casa Verde. I love living there because the flat is nice, Jen and I get along very well and we have really nice neighbours in Patricia and Roberto (Polish-Honduran couple). The only responsibility I have nowadays is to work on a Spanish grammar book on my own, something I actually really enjoy doing, and getting ready for Ecuador.

When I leave here my semi-holiday status will terminate and I will be initiated into a very busy work life in Quito. Finally, I am dreading being apart from Sandra, especially because we don’t know when we will see each other again and we know that we will not live together for seven months.

So what else is there for me to do than to enjoy the last weeks of being here?

Love to all of you!

Chiara
